There are many words that may look and sound strange to those who haven't played craps before. If you need an explanation to any of the terms used in the game of craps, please look in the dictionary below.

  • Any Craps - You are predicting that the shooter will land 2, 3 or 12 on the next roll. Pays 7:1 with a 11.1% edge.
  • Any 7- you are predicting that the shooter will get 7 on the next roll. Pays 4:1 with a 16.7% edge. (So avoid!)
  • Back Line - See: Don't Pass Line Bet.
  • Buy Bets - Bet on the numbers 4, 10, 5, 9, 6, and 8. If your number comes up before a 7, congratulations: you win (after the Come Out roll).
  • Big 6 & Big 8 - You are predicting that the shooter will land a six or an eight before a seven. Pays out evens with an edge of 9.1%.
  • Big Red - You are predicting that the shooter will get any 7 on the next roll
  • Come Box - Where you place your Come bet (yes, really!)
  • Come Bet - You are predicting that the dice will pass. The bet is placed after the Come Out roll.
  • Come Out Roll - The 1st roll in each round. Establishes the "point" (for Pass and Don't pass bets). Pass bets win if the come out roll is 7 or 11, and lose if the come out roll is 2, 3, or 12. Don't Pass bets lose if the come out roll is 7 or 11, and win if the come out roll is 2 or 3. Don't Pass bets tie when the come out roll is 12.
  • Crap - 2, 3, and 12. Craps - 2, 3, and 12 on the "Come out roll".
  • Crap Out - To roll a craps on the Come Out roll.
  • Don't Come Bet - You are predicting that the dice will not pass. The wager is placed after the Come Out roll.
  • Don't Pass Line - The area on the craps table where you place your Don't Pass bets.
  • Don't Pass Bet - You are predicting that the shooter lands 2 or 3 on the Come out roll. The player will also win if a 7 is rolled before the point is repeated. Has a house edge of 1.40%.
  • Double Odds - An odds bet that is double the original pass/come "Flat" or "Contract" bet.
  • Edge - The "casino tax" on the bets that are placed.
  • Field Bet - A bet that a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 will be rolled. The bet pays even money for 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11, and 2:1 for 2 or 12.
  • Free Odds Bet - A bet madeat the same time as the Pass Line, Don't Pass Line, Come and Don't Come bets after a point has been established.
  • Front Line - See Pass Line Bet.
  • Hard Way - You are predicting that dice showing the same number and totalling 4, 6, 8, 10 will be rolled before that number is rolled with "soft dice" (ie different numbers on the dice adding up to 4, 6, 8 or 10 or a 7)
  • Horn Bet - You are predicting that the shooter will get 2, 3, 11, or 12.
  • Lay Bet - The converse of a Buy Bet. You can place a wager on 4, 10, 5, 9, 6, and 8. TIf the 7 comes up before you win.
  • Lay Odds - An odds wager following a Don't Pass bet with a point being established.
  • Off - A marker placed on the bets that show that they are not at risk on the next roll.
  • One Roll Bets - A bet only dependent on the following roll of the dice.
  • Pass-Line Bet - Made before the Come Out roll and wins if 7 or 11 is rolled, or when a point is landed before a 7. Loses when the Come Out roll is 2, 3, or 12, or when a 7 is rolled before the point. House edge of 1.41%.
  • Place Bets - A bet at a place number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10). If the number is rolled before a 7, you win.
  • Point - Set on the Come Out roll, and can be a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. In order to "pass", the shooter must repeat the number before rolling a 7.
  • Press a Bet (Press) - Doube your wager when you win, or "letting it ride".
  • Puck - (Disk) - A marker to inform the players whether the odds are on or off. It is flipped to "on" following the Come Out roll when a point has been set.
  • Right Bettor - Someone betting on the Pass Line (with the shooter).
  • Shooter - The person who is rolling the dice.
  • 7 Out - When a 7 is landed after the point has been set but before the point has been repeated.
  • Stickman - The man or woman who shouts out the dice results and scoops the dice back to the shooter. Also places and pays the bets.
  • Taking Odds - To make an Odds wager.
  • True Odds - The physical odds of rolling any total number (due to the law of probabilities). There is generally a difference between this and the House Odds which gives the House its edge.
  • Working Bets - Live bets that are being played
  • Wrong Bettor - A player who bets on the Don't Pass Line (against the shooter).
