Craps Odds

Craps is quite a complex game (we like to think of it as rich!). There are many different types of bets and indeed, people often find the game intimidating when they walk into a casino. There´s always a good atmosphere around the craps table, but often people who are not familiar with the game will nod widely and move on if they are not familiar with the rules.

But it needn´t be like that. There are some relaly easy bets to get going, and one of the benefits of the complexity, is that it makes craps such a rich experience when you do get the hang of it. Online is the perfect place to perfect your craps skills, where you can play at your own speed.

With so many different bets, it is important, however, to understand the different odds you´ll get. That way, you can at least focus or weight your play to those bets with the lowest house egde and increase your overall odds of winning.

Pass Line
The Pass Line is the most common type of bet that you make before the Come-Out Roll, and pays even money or 1:1. The House Edge on a Pass Line Bet is 1.4%.

Don't Pass
The Odds on a Don't Pass are actually better than the Pass Line and it also pays evens or 1:1. So although you are placing a "wrong" bet and betting against the shooter, your odds are better at 1.36%

Come
A Come bet may be madeafter the come out roll. Come bets pay 1:1 with a House Edge of 1.41%, the same as a Pass Line.

Don't Come
Like the Don't Pass bet, but placed after after the come out roll. Pays 1:1 with a House Edge of 1.36%.

Place Bets
The are bets on the numbers 4,5,6,8,9 and 10. If your number hits before the 7 (a natural) is rolled, you win.
  • 4 or 10 pays 9:5, House Edge 6.7%
  • 5 or 9 pays 7:5, House edge 4%
  • 6 or 8 pays 7:6, House Edge 1.5%.

Big 6 / Big 8
You´ll get superior odds on a Place Bet on 6 or 8, so avoid this bet.

Lay Bets
Here you are betting that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and/or 10 will not be rolled before a 7. There´s a 5% commission on this bet which is levied to increase the house edge. They make the rules:
  • 4 and 10 pay 1:2, House Edge 2.44%
  • 5 and 9 pay 2:3, House Edge 3.23%
  • 6 and 8 pay 5:6, House Edge 4%.

Hardway Bets
These are the following, rolled the "Hard Way" (with doubles). Odds are pretty poor
  • 4 (double 2),
  • 6 (double 3),
  • 8 (double 4) and
  • 10 (double 5).
  • Hardway 4 and 10 pay 7:1 with a House Edge of 11.11%.
  • Hardway 6 and 8 pay 9:1, House Edge 9.01%.
